1. Current Practices Based on Common Assumptions

The ICS Equity Framework and Process provides a clear way to assess the school and district work, while also providing a pragmatic path forward at the school and district level. Using the steps within the ICS Equity Four Cornerstones to operationalize equity (see Figure 1 below).

Figure 1:  ICS Equity Four Cornerstones

It is important to keep in mind the work and responsibilities of the School and District Leadership Teams (as discussed in Digital Module 0), and their role in creating pragmatic multi-year plans to operationalize equity. The School and District Leadership Teams use the four steps below (and in Figure 2 below) to create their multi-year ICS Equity Plan.

Step 1: The SLT and DLT complete their ICS Equity Action Plan

Step 2: The School Leadership Team (SLT) Creates a School Multi-Year Equity Plan Based on Their Data from its Equity Action Plan

Step 3: The District Leadership Team (DLT) Reviews the SLT Multi-Year Plans and Completes a District Multi-Year Equity Plan

Step 4: Sample Multi-Year Equity Plans

Figure 2:  Multi-Year Plan Process

Step 1: The SLT and DLT Complete their ICS Equity Action Plan

We suggest that each team complete their ICS Equity Action Plan (attached to the bottom of Digital Module 0 and Digital Module 1) as part of their initial work at the ICS Equity Institute Part 1 and then schedule a follow-up meeting/meetings to complete the process. Each ICS Equity Digital Module/Step is delineated in the first column, while the recommended practices are delineated in the middle column for the School Leadership Team to move the work forward. In the third column, the SLT Team determines what work has been completed, and in the last column, the SLT Team discusses their agreed-upon next steps.

Cornerstone 1: Focus on Equity Application
Cornerstone 2: Align Staff and Students Application
Cornerstone 3: Transform Teaching and Learning
Cornerstone 4: Leverage Policy and Funding

Step 2: The School Leadership Team (SLT) Creates a School Multi-Year Equity Plan Based on Their Data from the Equity Action Plan

The School Leadership Teams in Step 2 of the process, review their Next Steps within their ICS Equity Action Plan and put together each step in a School Multi-Year Equity Plan by listing the specific goals and task for each year of the plan in Column 1. Often School Leadership Teams find it helpful to color code the work in the ICS Equity Action Plan by Year as the first step to transitioning the Next Steps into and School Multi-Year Equity Action Plan. In Column 2, the SLT delineates the specific timeline for each task and finally, in Column 3, the SLT designates a facilitator(s) of the task and participants.

Step 3: The District Leadership Team (DLT) Reviews the SLT Multi-Year Plans and Completes a District Multi-Year Equity Plan

In Step 3 of the process, the District Leadership Team (DLT) reviews all of the SLT’s School Multi-Year Equity Plans and completes the District Equity Action Plan, delineating each step in the District Multi-Year Equity Plan by listing the specific goals and task for each year of the plan in Column 1. In Column 2, the DLT, delineates the specific timeline for each task and finally, in Column 3, the DLT designates a facilitator(s) of the task and participants.

Step 4: Sample Multi-Year Equity Plans and Scenarios

Franklin Public Schools in Wisconsin has shared their Multi-Year Equity Plan as an example of how to move the District Equity work forward. Franklin Public Schools’ entire District Multi-Year Equity Plan is attached at the end of this Digital Module. We want to thank Franklin Public Schools in Wisconsin for sharing their process of moving equity forward.
